Look out from anywhere on the east coast of Bali and the land that catches your eye is the island of Lombok, similar in size yet vastly different from its sister island, despite its proximity across the strait that bears its name. Not only is it administered separately, but Lombok also has a distinct animal and plant life and is home to species – such as the tree kangaroo – not seen in Bali and more associated with Australia than south-east Asia.
Dominated by Gunung Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-highest volcanic peak, Lombok is a natural wonderland, where ribbons of white sand beaches meet dense tropical jungles that lead to volcanic crater lakes. It is an island of authentic palm-frond houses of the indigenous Sasak people, towering ancient pagoda-like temples, and traditional crafts and agricultural practices, which together make Lombok a microcosm of the entire region.
With so much to do in and around its waters, an overnight charter is the stress-free laid-back way to visit the island from Bali’s Serangan Harbour, with timings entirely up to you rather than the local ferry captains.
An overnight charter to Lombok also allows you to explore the island as you wish, be that to take in the spectacular talents of the surfers on the huge breaks of Bangko Bangko (Desert Point), or the popular diving spots of the mighty Belongas Bay, where hammerhead sharks make spectacular, if menacing, visitors.
If solitude and magnificent vistas are what you’re after, look no further than the island’s south west regions, and the still largely undiscovered ‘secret’ Gili islands just off the Lombok coast. Here you’ll find no all-night parties, just pristine Eden-like bays, stretches of sand where you’re more likely to encounter the native wildlife than another human being, and shallows that draw in even the most easy-going of visitors towards the offshore reefs that simply teem with the darting colours and activity of the tropical fish that call them home.
