Just a short hop from the shoreline of Lombok and across the strait from Bali, the Gili Islands are an archipelago of three small and surprisingly different paradise islands. These tiny circles of low-lying land, covered in jungle and ringed by uninterrupted ribbons of sun-drenched white sand and crystal-clear waters, are popular with those seeking out a luxury cast away experience.
Sleep above or below deck, just swimming distance from the islands renowned for their snorkelling and scuba diving, on an overnight charter. Circumnavigate the three islands and take your pick of secluded beaches. Take in some of Indonesia’s most impressive golden-hued sunsets, and gaze at the unexplored majesty of starry nights from your very own private floating hotel.
Then, as the gentle lapping of the waves on the hull wake you at first light, plunge once more into the bright waters, with the chance to encounter Green and Loggerhead turtles, as well as adorable pigmy seahorses, and an entire spectrum of colourful reef-living fish, whether you opt to dive at Shark or Manta Point or any site, bay, or cove in between.
Whether you decide to stay anchored at one of the islands, or sail between them, an overnight charter gives you that freedom. Sure, all three of these idyllic islands offer turquoise shallows, beaches fringed with bowing coconut palms, and traffic-free roads, but each one also has its own story to tell.
At the top end you’ll find Gili Trawangan (or Gili T), the bastion of the party scene and with the pick of the on-land accommodation options. A little quieter is Gili Air, popular with snuggling couples in search of the most romantic of getaways, while on Gili Meno – perhaps the most authentic of the three islands – you’ll find the locals busying themselves with fishing and salt production, free from the worries of the outside world. When the word serene was created, it could have been designed to describe a boat cruise across the Gili Islands.
